The Lindendale is a family home built from fourteen 20ft shipping containers in Lindendale, a few minutes out of Lismore in the Northern Rivers of NSW. It took less than 10 weeks from start to finish, and all fourteen containers were craned into place in five hours. Here’s how it was built, and what it shows about choosing shipping container home builders who do the work in their own factory.

The build at a glance

  • Location: Lindendale NSW, near Lismore
  • Containers: fourteen 20ft containers
  • Style: industrial, with top-end fittings and finishes
  • Design: by the clients themselves
  • Build time: under 10 weeks, start to finish
  • Install on site: within five hours

A client-designed home

Our clients designed the Lindendale themselves and knew exactly what they wanted: lots of space, and an industrial feel that runs right through the house. Grouping fourteen 20ft containers gave them a much bigger home than a single box suggests, and the top-end fittings stand out against the bold steel.

Step 1: Fit out every container in the factory

Every container was fitted out in our factory at 39 Habib Drive, South Lismore, just down the road from the site. Working under cover kept the build moving whatever the weather, and the containers left the factory finished. That’s the main difference with a factory-based builder: most of the work is done before anything reaches your block.

Step 2: Deliver and crane into place

Because the work was done before the trucks left, the on-site part was quick. All fourteen containers were delivered to Lindendale and craned into place within five hours, and the whole build took less than 10 weeks from start to finish.

Industrial isn’t the only look

The industrial finish was our clients’ choice. Container homes don’t have to look industrial. The same factory approach works for sleek, fully lined homes like our Hinterland Luxury Home at Marom Creek near Lismore, which you’d never pick as containers, and for off-grid weekenders like The Ranch at Tabulam.

What to ask shipping container home builders

  • Where is the fit-out done? We fit out in our own South Lismore factory, so the containers arrive on site finished.
  • Can I see finished homes? Visit our projects page, come to the factory, or stay at Boulder Ridge near Tenterfield, a CBG-built home made from eight 20ft high-cube containers.
  • Who handles approvals? A container home needs the same approvals as any other house. See council approval for container homes by state.
  • What about cyclones? We can build to any cyclone rating up to C4, engineered to suit your site and your certifier’s requirements.
